Hike the North Downs Way (all year round)

Spend a magical day hiking among the beautiful autumn leaves and golden wheat and rapeseed fields of the Kent countryside along the North Downs Way. For more information on things to see along the North Downs Way, please click here.

 

 

Getting there from Stable Oak:
On foot – Walk to Harrietsham Station car park, cross the footbridge and turn right to follow the path alongside the railway line = 15 mins

 

 

Buy and Cook Local Produce (all year round)

Kent’s farm shops are constantly teeming with local produce.

The nearest farm shop (just 2 miles away!) to Stable Oak Cottages is Chegworth Valley. Chegworth Valley sell an variety of local produce, from hand-picked strawberries and apples, to fresh fruit juices and honey. They’ll even deliver a fruit and veg box to your cottage when you come and stay with us.

Getting there from Stable Oak:
On foot – Follow the pavements on the A20 northbound, and southbound on Chegworth Lane and Water Lane = 45 mins
By car – Take the A20 northbound, then southbound on Chegworth Road and Water Lane = 10 mins
By bus – Walk to the Roebuck Inn (15 mins walk from Stable Oak), take the 10X bus from outside the Inn to Chegworth Lane walk 15 mins from this stop to the Chegworth Valley farm shop = 35 mins

Pick Your Own at Chilton Manor Farm (September and October)

Just 9 miles from Stable Oak Cottages, Chilton Manor Farm offers pick your own, as well as an enormous amount of different local produce. From mid-September, you can pick apples, pears and autumn raspberries, and from October you can even pick your own pumpkin!

Getting there from Stable Oak:
By car – Take the A20 northbound, going Eastbound up Greenway Court Road and Hollingbourne Hill (through the beautiful North Downs), turning right on Ruins Barn Road, past the Kent Science Park. Turn right on Cromer Road, then left on Highsted Road until you reach Chilton Manor Farm = 22 mins

 

 

 

Leeds Castle Festival of Flowers (15 – 20 September)

Leeds Castle, the ‘loveliest castle in the world’ is just over a mile from Stable Oak Cottages. This 11th Century castle is most famous for being the residence of one of Henry VIII’s six wives, Catherine of Aragon.

From 15 September, Leeds Castle will be hosting a flower festival in the castle and its grounds, as well as holding specialist talks, demonstrations and workshops by international award-winning floral designers. For more information on events at Leeds Castle please click here.

On foot – Follow the pavements on the A20 northbound (following signs to Leeds Castle) – 45 mins
By car – Take the A20 northbound (following signs to Leeds Castle) = 5 mins
By bus – Walk to the Roebuck Inn (15 mins walk from Stable Oak), take the 10X bus from outside the Inn to Broomfield Turning, Hollingbourne, and walk 16 mins from this stop to Leeds Castle = 35 mins

Halloween at Belmont House and Gardens (28 October)

This beautiful Georgian house is a must-see in Kent. On 28 October, walk a spooky trail around the gardens and have a go at carving your own pumpkins before warming up with some delicious autumn treats in a spooky pop-up tent.

By car – Take the A20 southbound, left up Hubbards Hill (through the beautiful North Downs), following the road until turning right on Kettle Hill Road. Turn left up Stallsfield Road and follow the signs until you reach Belmont House = 25 mins
