The Changing Seasons of Stable Oak: Honouring Old Friends and Simple Moments

There is a unique rhythm to life on a smallholding. It’s measured not by the clock, but by the turning of the seasons, the morning feeds, and the quiet moments shared with the animals who call this place home. Lately, those moments have felt a little more reflective as we navigate a poignant chapter here at Stable Oak: our beloved animals growing older and the tender farewells that come with it.

If you’ve visited us over the years, you know that our animals aren’t just a part of the landscape—they are the very heart of the Stable Oak family. They’ve greeted guests, brought endless smiles, and taught us so much about life. But just like us, they grow old, and saying goodbye to these cherished characters is the hardest part of the journey. We still deeply miss the vibrant presence of our beautiful pig, Bella, who gave us 14 wonderful years of joy, and we've recently watched our animal community grow smaller and quieter.

It leaves the fields feeling a bit more still, but it also makes the connections we have right now feel incredibly precious.

Take Meggie, our giant Toulouse goose. Meggie hatched right here at Stable Oak. Once part of a bustling flock, she finds herself alone now, the sole keeper of her domain. Yet, watching her pace her patch, there is a beautiful resilience in her quiet contentment. She isn't looking back; she is simply living in the here and now, ruling over her space with the same dignity she’s always had.

This chapter reminds us that while things change and old friends pass on, the warmth and spirit of Stable Oak remain. The birds still sing in the mornings, the Kentish countryside still offers its peaceful embrace, and the memories of the animals who shaped this beautiful place are woven into the very land.

Life looks a little different now, but it is no less special. It’s a time for quieter reflections, grateful hearts, and appreciating the peaceful "here and now" with the old friends who are still by our side.
