Leeds Castle

A little history…

Leeds Castle is a Norman castle built in 1119. It was originally used as a stronghold until it was made into a home in the 13th Century. The beautiful castle seen today dates mostly from the 19th Century having been remodelled.

 

 

 

Things to do…

Leeds Castle offers a lot to do for the whole family:

  • Wander around the beautiful castle grounds, where an annual triathlon is held (and the mote is used as a pool!).
  • Challenge your friends and family to see who can be the first to get to the centre of the maze. Then, visit the underground grotto.
  • Take in a falconry display.

Rochester Castle

A little history…

Rochester Castle was built as a tower-keep in 1127 to help stop invasions into south-east England. Although the castle has seen much damage it is still a beautiful castle and also offers stunning views of the river and surrounding area.

Canterbury Castle

A little history…

Like the castles in Leeds and Rochester, Canterbury Castle is a Norman-era castle and was built to protect the road from Dover to London. What remains now is part of the castle keep, and is open all year round to visitors. Whilst it may not be traditionally beautiful, it certainly has its own charm!

 

 

 

Things to do…

Once you’ve finished admiring Canterbury Castle, there are many other attractions in the city to keep you busy:

  • Canterbury Cathedral is part of a World Heritage Site, and is the site of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury (1161 – 1170).
  • Canterbury high street has something for everyone from quirky lop-sided bookshops to mainstream cafés and restaurants.
  • Westgate Gardens are a beautiful place for a stroll, and even boast an Oriental plane tree thought to be over 200 years old!

Dover Castle

A little history…

Dover Castle, also a Norman castle, has been described as the ‘key to England’ because of its location on the south-east coast of England. It is the largest castle in England, and surrounded by a beautiful landscape – you won’t be sorry to make the trip from Stable Oak Cottages!

 

 

Things to do…

Apart from take in the breathtaking views of both the castle and surrounding landscape, there’s a lot to do in Dover:

  • Eat fish and chips in one of the many takeaway restaurants along the seafront in Dover.
  • Explore part of the North Downs Way by the White Cliffs of Dover.
  • Visit Fan Bay Deep Shelter, a series of tunnels built as shelter for gun battery soldiers during the Second World War.
